CyberPoint Celebrates 4th Year Mentoring Cristo Rey Jesuit High School Students
BALTIMORE, MD (September 6, 2013) — This week, we welcomed our 4th class of interns from Cristo Rey Jesuit High School's Corporate Internship Program. CyberPoint began supporting Cristo Rey when we were still in our first year, which means we've mentored Cristo Rey students every full year we've been in business.
Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, located in the Fells Point neighborhood just up Eastern Avenue from our Baltimore headquarters, gives young people an opportunity to earn a quality education and solid preparation for life. The school's Corporate Internship Program is a distinctive and innovative way of making a private, college-preparatory education affordable for urban families. Students contribute to the cost of their education by working as part-time, entry-level employees at Baltimore businesses and not-for-profits. The Corporate Internship Program's goals include:
- providing entry-level work experience in professional office settings where students are exposed to college-educated colleagues,
- helping students develop skills for success in their future careers, and
- building a network of corporate contacts students can draw on as they grow into working adults.
CyberPoint is one of Cristo Rey's corporate sponsors. We subsidize half a school year's tuition for students who work for us one or two days a week. While they're with CyberPoint, interns do meaningful work and get real exposure to our business—they're not just relegated to mailroom or photocopier duty. Our Cristo Rey interns build computers, create their own websites, build robots, learn Java, are taught programming, develop games, and deliver presentations to their colleagues. They learn valuable time management skills and get the chance to research college and career choices.
CyberPoint usually has four Cristo Rey interns at any one time. Our people volunteer their time to mentor the interns, giving them learning experiences based on their individual knowledge and interests.
How have our interns done? We're proud to say that all three of our Cristo Rey alumni are now enrolled in college. One of them, having successfully completed his first collegiate year, returned to intern with us over the summer. And the word is out among those still in high school: one current Cristo Rey intern requested placement with us because he's interested in an engineering career.
CyberPoint's corporate sponsorship of Cristo Rey is one way of giving back to Baltimore. We're committed to the city, and involvement with this excellent school is a great way of making good on that commitment.
