Baltimore Artists Anna and Caroline Zellhofer, Selected to Create New Work for Annual Women in Cyber Security Reception

BALTIMORE, MD (November 17, 2015) — CyberPoint International announced today that Baltimore artists Anna and Caroline Zellhofer were selected for a special commission to create a work of art for the 2nd Annual Women in Cyber Security reception. The reception will be held on November 19th, 2015 in Baltimore's Inner Harbor. Bringing together women from across the region and all different points on the career spectrum, the reception is aimed at creating connections among those working in the academic, government, business and technical arenas of cyber security. This special commission, to be revealed at the event, was created in partnership with Maryland Art Place (MAP), one of the state's leading support organizations for emerging and mid-career artists.

The Zellhofer sisters were selected following MAP's June open call to female visual artists in the greater Baltimore metropolitan area. Selection committee members were impressed by the Zellhofers' visual and process-oriented exploration of the "creating connections" theme, as well as the interdisciplinary collaboration and experimentation used in creating their work.

Anna Zellhofer is currently in her final year at the Community College of Baltimore County, studying Fine Art with a focus on Fabrication and Printmaking. Anna's abstract work explores ideas through the interplay of the visual arts and industrial manufacturing processes. She is also currently an intern at the Baltimore Fab Lab. Caroline Zellhofer is a senior Mechanical Engineering major at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). She drew inspiration from her work at Harvard University where she researched nanofabrication and characterization of quasicrystal metasurfaces using shadow-sphere lithography. After graduating, she plans to pursue a PhD in materials science and engineering, followed by a career in materials research.

"We were intrigued by the Zellhofers' unusual abstract visual explorations," said Jennifer Eiben, CyberPoint's Community Outreach Manager. "At first, we were not really sure what we were looking at, but as we learned about their process and saw how their art and their collaboration embodied our themes, we knew we had found something special."

"It was exciting to see the arts and sciences come together in the Zellhofers' work," said Peter Kilpe, CyberPoint's Chief Creative Officer. "Despite coming from very different educational backgrounds, both women had an integral role in the creative process. Beyond the work they created for our event, we look forward to seeing the results of their future explorations and collaboration."
